Unspoken Thoughts

How many people come to church to worship?

This is a question that arose as I looked around the sanctuary one Sunday morning and saw people chatting as the choir sang.

Out of curiosity I looked at the congregation as the pastor offered his prayer before starting his sermon; to my awe I saw people carrying on conversations, two men in the choir appeared to be chuckling after one told an apparently funny joke to the other. One person was typing a text message in her cell phone. I found it hard to believe what I was seeing.

I wondered where their mind was; they were not thing of the service. Where were their hearts, certainly not on God, nor worship? Those talking must have thought this was a social gathering, and the ones looking at pagers, cell phones and PDA’s; they must be so wrapped up in their job or personal relationships that they have no time for God.

I looked up the definition of Worship;

Worship; noun

1: reverence toward a divine being or supernatural power

2: expression of reverence

3: extravagant respect or devotion

Worships; verb

1: honor or revere

2: perform or take part in worship

I searched the Bible to see what God’s word said;

WORSHIP, to be rendered to God only, Ex. 20:3; Deut. 5:7; 6:13; Matt. 4:10; Luke 4:8; Acts 10:26; 14:15; Col. 2:18; Rev. 19:10; 22:8.

Wow! There it was; “You shall have no other gods before me”. Basically this is what each of these references says.

Don’t take me wrong and think I am saying I have never had my mind wander during a worship service. I have let worry about family, friends and job keep me from giving my whole focus to God. My thought here are about those whose actions; talking, playing games on their phone, or phones ringing; or other acts of non worship. Not to mention these distractions have keep the persons around them from giving their focus to God.

WORSHIP, to be rendered to God only, Ex. 20:3; Deut. 5:7; 6:13; Matt. 4:10; Luke 4:8; Col. 2:18; Rev. 19:10; 22:8.

When we enter into worship, God should be the only thing on our mind. We must learn to give our problems to Him, and many times we need to thank him for the problems we are struggling with. We often times are burdened so we will have to be more dependent on Him, at others there is a lesson we must learn.

Where is your relationship with God? Do you find yourself constantly distracted from offering Him worship? Do you easily lose focus when listening to a speaker? Have you put God on the back burner while trying to keep up with the hurry up’s in life? God’s word tells us to not worry about tomorrow.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
