Building On The Foundation Of Salvation

The very foundation of our Christian walk is our salvation, this is given to us freely. However our lives become the building that will be built upon the foundation. The building is our walk and the strength of our walk is based upon how we handle our responsibility to Jesus Christ. The expanse of our walk will be in accordance with how we bear our responsibilities. As Christians we should know the cost of building on this foundation.

Christ tells us in Luke 14:28 we should calculate the cost of building a relationship with Him. Read the entire chapter for context

Luke 14:28 "For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn't first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?

A few of the cost:

Are you willing to put God at the top of your list?

Matthew 22:37 He said to him, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

Matthew 22:38 This is the greatest and most important commandment.

Matthew 22:39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.

Are you willing to serve?

Mark 9:35 Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all."

Are you willing to give up possessions?

Luke 18:22 When Jesus heard this, He told him, "You still lack one thing: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me."

If you are not: Those whom you attempt to minister will not believe you because they have not seen your words put into action.

Luke 14:29 Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to make fun of him,

If we do not accept these responsibilities when we lay the foundation on which we are to build our Christian walk; the building will be slow, if ever to start. If the responsibility is never taken the foundation is all that will remain.

Building upon the foundation requires actions:

Matthew 7:24  "Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock.

Matthew 7:25 The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn't collapse, because its foundation was on the rock.

Luke 6:47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to Me, hears My words, and acts on them:

Luke 6:48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn't shake it, because it was well built.

Our spiritual house will crumble if we fail to act:

Matthew 7:26 But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn't act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

Matthew 7:27 The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great!"

Luke 6:49 But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great!"

The point of having our spiritual house crumble due to lack of fulfilling our responsibility is brought to view through other scripture as well:

James 2:17 In the same way faith, if it doesn't have works, is dead by itself.

John 15:5  "I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me.

John 15:6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

Matthew 25:25  So I was afraid and went off and hid your talent in the ground. Look, you have what is yours.'

Many Christians have laid a good foundation. Many have begun to build on it through Bible study, small group meetings, and church and Sunday school attendance. I believe that this preparation is just the gathering of the materials to build the house Christ speaks of in the preceding passages.

I believe His message is to inform us that, after hearing if we do not take action by being  doers of His word. And through the service we offer others, by showing the lost that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, by bringing others to His saving grace. As well as through sacrificial giving of our time and finances, we are at risk of the river of burden and the wind  of defeat destroying what we have built. See Psalms 32:6

Have you calculated the cost?

Is God first in all you do?

Do you love you neighbor, regardless of his shortcomings?

Do you give sacrificially?

Are you serving others?

If you are, your spiritual house is well embedded in the foundation and will withstand whatever storm life throws at you.

If not, do a home inspection; consult with The Master Builder about correcting the weaknesses and making a stronger bond to the foundation.
