Unspoken Thoughts

Too busy to help?

From sermon notes from my former pastor

The Parable of the Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37

25On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
26"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
27He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'[3] ; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[4] "
28"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."
29But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
30In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins[5] and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'
36"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"
37The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."
Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

Are you settling for the minimum?

Luke 10:29 29But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

By wanting to justify himself, he was really saying, “What is the least I have to do”

Things, which keep us from being obedient;

Personal Desires; of having bigger and more, the “keeping up with the Jones’s is still very much alive.” Luke 12:18

Materialism; is very much alive in the lives of most people, our minds are saturated with advertisements which tell us we can not get along with out certain items.

 1 Timothy 6
10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grief's.

Popularity; everyone wants to be liked and complemented, even if it means compromising there values and beliefs.

 John 12
43for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

Racism; but not in it’s true definition; we have an innate desire to be with people who share the same values and are of equal socio economic status. We need to realize God created us “all” as His children.

Galatians 3:28
28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Being Religious; practice what you preach.  Matthew 23

Today’s excuses for not being obedient;

It is to risky, It may cost me some time and effort as well as taking me away from what I want to do.

It their own fault so why should I help?

It is way to costly, I need the money for my own desires.

I just don’t have the time to do anything for anyone.

The way we should deal with hurting people we chance to meet:

Be spirit led as the Samaritan was in verse Luke 10:33

Do what you can as he did in verse Luke 10:34

Invest in the hurting people you meet as he did in verse Luke10: 35

Love people everywhere and anyway you can

The greatest thing you can do is show the love of Christ to the downtrodden you chance to meet, and you best do this by sharing Christ with them.

Who will you happen upon today?

Could it be a neighbor?

Could it be a co-worker?

Could it be a relative?

Could it be a stranger you chance to meet?

As Christians we should follow Christ’s word when we see a hurting person and do all we can to minister to their needs.

As you go through you day remember Christ’s words in Luke 10; 37

“Go and do likewise.”

As Christians we should follow Christ’s word when we see a hurting person and do all we can to minister to their needs.

Will you be like the robber who said, "What's yours is mine".

Will you be like the priest who said, " What's mine is mine".

Will you be like the Samaritan and say " What's mine is yours".
